Installation instructions
NOTE:Remove any
existing anti-virus software other than McAfee. Because most anti-virus
software operates at a very low level within your system, two anti-virus
programs that compete for access to the same files or that perform
critical operations can make your system very unstable.
1. Download the compressed VirusScan.zip file from the NSSB FTPsite to a computer you are
sure is not infected with a virus.
2. Make a new temporary folder on your hard disk, then use WinZip,
PKZIP, or a similar utility to extract the VirusScan installation
files to that temporary folder.
NOTE: If you
are using Windows NT Workstation v4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional,
you must log in to your system with local Administrator rights to
install VirusScan. To install VirusScan on Windows 95 or windows
98, you do not need to log in with any particular profile or rights.
3. Choose Run from the Start menu in the Windows taskbar.
4. Type x:\SETUP.EXE in the text box provided, then click OK.
Here, x represents the path to the folder that contains your extracted
VirusScan files. To search for the correct files on your hard disk,
click Browse.
5. When Setup begins, follow the onscreen instructions.
6. Eventually you will be presented with the choice of Typical or
Custom installation. If you choose Custom, you can add an additional
component, Download Scan to your installation.
NOTE: NSSB now
scans all email messages on Makani before they reach your school,
so scanning them again will only slow your computer's performance.
7. Once you have selected your custom components, or the typical installation,
click Install.
8. At this point, you can Finish your installation or Choose your
configuration options.
CONFIGURATION
You can choose to scan your system, create an emergency disk, or update
your virus definition files before you start the VShield scanner and
the VirusScan Console.
1. Select Scan Memory for Viruses before Configuring. Next click Configure.
2. Select Scan boot record at startup (Windows 95 & 98 only)
3. Select Create emergency Disk
4. Select Run Default Scan for Viruses after Installation
5. When you have finished selecting the options, click Next to continue.
The Emergency Disk creation wizard starts immediately.
6. Select Run AutoUpdate Now, Click Next
After downloading the latest updates to your virus definition files,
setup displays its final panel and asks if you want to start the VShield
scanner and the VirusScan Console immediately.
7. Select Start VirusScan, the click Finish. Your software is ready
for use.
NOTE:If you had
a previous VirusScan version installed on your computer, you must
restart your system in order to start the VShield scanner.
TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION
Once your install it, VirusScan software is ready to scan your system
for infected files. You can verify that it has installed correctly
and that it can properly scan for viruses with the following test.
1. Open a standard Window text editor, such as Notepad, then type
this character string as one line, with no spaces or carriage returns:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
NOTE:The line
shown above should appear as one line in your text editor window,
so be sure to maximize your text editor window and delete any carriage
returns. Also, be sure to type the letter O, not the number 0, in
the "X5O…" that begins the test message.
2. Save the file with the name EICAR.COM. The file size will be 69
or 70 bytes.
3. Start your VirusScan software and allow it to scan the directory
that contains EICAR.COM. When VirusScan software examines this file,
it will report finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
IMPORTANT: This
file is not a virus-it cannot spread or infect other files, or otherwise
harm your system. Delete the file when you have finished testing
your installation to avoid alarming other users.
CREATING & CONFIGURING SCHEDULED TASKS
Using the VirusScan console:
When your virus protection is automated using the ePolicy Orchestrator
Agent, your configuration is updated and managed automatically and
you do not need to configure the VirusScan Console. The VirusScan
Console exists to allow you to run scan operations and other tasks
on the dates and at the times you choose, or at intervals you set.
As soon as you install VirusScan software on your computer and reboot,
VShield software will immediately begin scanning your system using
a default configuration that provides you with a basic range of protection
for your system. On systems without the ePolicy Orchestrator Agent,
the other tasks listed in the console windows have default configurations
set up, but these tasks remain dormant until you activate them. Follow
the steps below to enable these default tasks:
1. Click Start in the Windows taskbar, point to Programs, then to
Network Associates.
2. Choose VirusScan Console to make the Console window appear
Once you can display the Console window initially, you can also ensure
that it will load automatically at startup by choosing Load at startup
from the View menu.
3. Double click AutoUpdate in the VirusScan console window. Click
the Schedule tab to display the correct property page.
4. Select the Enable checkbox. The options in the Run and the Start
At areas become active.
5. Choose how often you want the task to run in the Run area. Depending
on which interval you select, the Start At area gives you a different
set of choices for your task schedule. NSSB recommends that you schedule
this task daily at a time when the computer will be running.
6. To have this task run within a random interval of the time you
set, select the Enable randomization checkbox, then enter a time period
of one or two hours in the Randomize Time Window text box. Click OK
to close the Task Properties dialog box.
7. Double click Scan My Computer. Click the Schedule tab. Select the
Enable checkbox. Choose how often you want the task to run in the
Run area. NSSB recommends that you schedule this task once daily at
a time when the computer will be running.
