ePolicy Orchestrator Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the main advantage of using the ePO Agent?

ANSWER: The primary advantage of the ePO Agent is that it operates in the background to protect the workstation from virus infections without the need for configuration or input from the user.

2. If I use the ePO Agent, will I still need to install the VirusScan and/or NetShield programs?

ANSWER: You can, but it is not necessary. The ePO Agent contacts the ePO Server and automatically installs and configures VirusScan and/or NetShield.

3. How much traffic is generated on our network by the ePO Agent?

ANSWER: When the ePO Agent is first installed, it contacts the ePO Server and requests a download of the VirusScan 4.5.1 scanning program or in the case of NT Servers, NetShield 4.5. This is a 15 MB download done at random intervals and is the only time the system sends significant traffic over the network. Thereafter, the ePO agent doesn't initiate any network traffic except for once every 720 minutes. At that time, it makes a short communication with the server to check for new policies and new virus definitions. The communication involves 3-20K of traffic.

4. If I install the ePO Agent, can I still add additional scans to my workstation beyond those set by policy?

ANSWER: Yes you can. The ePO Server instructs the Agent to scan a regularly updated default set of files on your workstation known to be subject to viruses. This configuration is intended to provide adequate protection with a minimum impact on performance. You can schedule additional tasks using the VirusScan console.

5. Can I uninstall the ePO Agent?

ANSWER: Yes you can.
