Computer Virus Alerts
- For those who downloaded McAfee 5958 and are having problems, McAfee has developed a SuperDAT remediation Tool to restore the svchost.exe file on affected systems.
1. From a machine that has Internet access, locate and download the Recovery SuperDAT at http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/tools/SDAT5958_EM.exe and save it to portable media.
2. Take the portable media to each affected machine and run the tool. If you are not able to run the tool on the affected machine, boot in safe mode
3. Execute the Recovery SuperDAT tool
4. Reboot in normal mode
5. Use the product update to update to 5959.[posted 04/22/2010]
- Be aware of Conficker Worm. W32/Conficker.worm exploits the MS08-067 vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Server Service. If the vulnerability is successfully exploited, it could allow remote code execution when file sharing is enabled. Machines should be patched and rebooted to clean the system, then rebooted again to prevent reinfection.
Please click here for more information about this new worm.
- Click
here to download the McAfee Conficker Detection Tool
1) It is important that you have applied the Microsoft Security Update to stop this worm.
2) McAfee is installed and has an updated DAT file of March 2009.

As a heads up, the @Mail server also commonly referred to as Makani email
for you old timers will be phased out due to budget cuts. The Makani @mail
accounts have the format of jhara@k12.hi.us or jdoe@makani.k12.hi.us or
jdoe@atmail.k12.hi.us etc. All student email accounts will be removed at
the close of business on June 30, 2009. Students should print out or
download all their important emails to their desktop/laptop computer
before the June 30, 2009 date. For teacher/staff, your Makani @mail
accounts will not be removed but we highly recommend that you
obtain another email provider and let the folks you correspond with know
your new email address. All teacher/staff should have a Lotus Notes email
account. The tech and maintenance support for the Makani @mail servers
will be discontinued. Should there be a crash or problem that we can't fix
ourselves, the email service will come to an abrupt end so that is why we
recommend teacher/staff start looking to migrate their Makani email
accounts to a different provider.
Schools that still require student email accounts, we are evaluating
using Google Apps & gmail education edition or Microsoft's Live@Edu email
for student email accounts. Will make a recommendation before the start
of the new school year. We are closing the chapter on the Makani
email system that has been in service since 1995. If you have any
questions please send them to NSSB . [posted 05/28/2009]
