Wireless Access Standards of Practice FAQ
Why are the Wireless Access Standard of Practice and guideline needed?
The wireless access standard of practice was established
to ensure the security, integrity and operational reliability of
the DOE network. Wireless access at a school or an office provides
network access not only to the school/office network but also to
the whole DOE network, affecting all DOE network users. Unapproved
and rogue wireless APs have caused severe network disruptions and
outages for school/office Local Area Networks (LAN) and the whole
DOE network. Security compromises and major virus/worm infestations
have occurred due to unapproved and unmanaged wireless access, and
will continue to occur with the installation of the insecure wireless
access devices.
What about existing wireless APs already installed?
Existing wireless APs need to comply with the guidelines
and standards of practice. If the existing wireless APs cannot comply
with the guidelines because it is a cheaper or older model that
doesn’t have the necessary security or management features, then
the device should be removed from the DOE network or moved to an
isolated/unclassified network segment (i.e. school computer lab)
where sensitive data access or major network disruptions cannot
occur.
How do I register my wireless Access Point (AP)
or Base Station (BS)?
Currently, as outlined in the Wireless Access Standards
of Practice, your School’s Administration or DOE office administrator needs
to approve the installation and have it registered in a wireless access database.
Go to http://wificentral.k12.hi.us/wifi to register your wireless Access Point (AP)
or Base Station (BS). If you don't know your login or password, send email
to nssb@k12.hi.us to get the info. This enterprise level and
network wide database will be the central approval authority for wireless APs
connected to the DOE network. Any wireless
APs not registered in the database will be considered a rogue AP and detection will
result in removal of the device from the network.
Who do I contact for assistance with installation of wireless
APs or have questions?
You can email nssb@k12.hi.us
for assistance.
